Origin
Raphael is an archangel in Jewish tradition and in Christianity. He is associated with healing, and he notably appears in the Second Temple period writings the Book of Tobit and the Book of Enoch. Islamic tradition identifies him with the angel Israfil.
Design
Raphael's first design, illustrated by Kazuma Kaneko, depicts him as a purple-skinned man with emerald eyes, a blonde mullet, and purple wings. He wears a blue-green chest plate, gauntlets, and leggings, adorned by white robes embroidered with golden cross patterning. He also wields a sword.
In Shin Megami Tensei IV, Raphael's design was illustrated by guest artist Keita Amemiya. He appears as a knightly figure whose body is comprised of spiky ornate metal, with circular joints and curved skeletal limbs. His face is pale white and located on his chest, possessing angel wings which span his entire upper body. Raphael carries an intricate metal lance in his right hand, whereas his left hand is disembodied, levitating near a glowing green orb on his shoulder.
In the Devil Children series, Raphael is a humanoid with purple hair, round glasses, angel wings, and a halo. He sports a white lab coat, jeans, and black shoes, while wielding a syringe and scalpels.

After clearing stage 29, if the Protagonist allowed Étienne Alphonse Laflèche to join him, has Uriel in his party, and has 15 points in his magic stat, Raphael will approach him and join his party.
Devil Children Black Book and Red Book
Raphael appears in Devil Children Red Book as a guardian for Elegy, since she wants to assist the Angel Army in bringing about Armageddon. He leads Elegy to Casino Town in Fire Land, where the Angel Army destroys it to punish the resident Demons for their reliance on gambling instead of working for money. Mirai Kaname sees the wreckage and question's Elegy's sense of justice, to which Raphael exclaims the world must be saved from ruin no matter what. He reasons that by purging the world of sin and corruption, it can be made beautiful.
Raphael promptly challenges Mirai to a battle, but loses and gifts her the Rainbow Eye. He and Elegy explain to Mirai that she is the daughter of Makai's lord Lucifer, who is trapped inside the Dark Palace while Azel, Elegy's father, poses as him. Raphael then warps off to Central Land with Elegy, urging Mirai to meet with Lucifer as the final battle draws near.
In Sanctuary, Mirai meets with Elegy, Nagahisa Kai, and Michael. If she chooses to stay on Lucifer's side and prepare Ragnarok, she battles Michael and Nagahisa's Neo Sphinx. The three disappear upon defeat, after which Raphael appears, telling Mirai that she gained Nagahisa's Angel Child powers. Surprised she was able to steer fate away from the Angel Army, he joins her team, eager to see what will become of the world.
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2

Raphael is found in the Internment Facility. After he, Uriel and Gabriel are first defeated, the four Archangels appear in the surface of the Occupied Sector.
Trivia

- Dekaja is listed twice in Raphael's skillset in Shin Megami Tensei II.
