Origin

An oni[a] is a type of violent or evil spirit from Japanese culture. Oni is often translated as "Japanese ogre". Notable oni include Shuten-dōji and Ibaraki-dōji, both of whom were famously slain by Minamoto no Yorimitsu.

Oni are often depicted wielding a kanabō,[b] a studded iron war-club. The Japanese phrase 鬼に金棒 oni ni kanabō (literally "[to give] a metal club to an oni") means "[to give someone or something] a decisive advantage".[1]

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne

Onis make up a large chunk of the Mantra Army. When getting to Ikebukuro, an Oni can be found who will attack the Demi-fiend just for trying to talk to him. On the first floor of Ikebukuro, there are two Onis waiting behind a door to ambush the Demi-fiend and take his belongings.

Another Oni on one of the floors of the Mantra's Headquarters can be conversed with, who will say that despite Thor pardoning him, he still does not like the Demi-fiend and attacks him.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

Onis make up most of the demon mercenaries in Sector Antlia created by Morax. They boast that they will invade the Earth and attack the Protagonist as he progresses the sector. When defeated they are shocked that they have lost against a human.
