Profile
Origin
Odin is the king of the Æsir (gods) in Norse paganism, and has his roots in earlier Germanic beliefs. He is typically depicted as an elder man with a long beard and one eye, accompanied by two ravens Huginn and Muninn that scout the world for him, and wielding a spear. He is a trickster god and has an unquenchable desire for knowledge, famously sacrificing his eye as payment to drink from the well of the god Mimir and hanging himself among the branches of Yggdrasil to learn the power of runes, giving him mastery of magic and poetry. He has hundred of names that signify his many aspects, including his intelligence, skill in battle, influence over death, and the terror he inspires.
Odin has his origins in common Germanic tradition. Amongst the Anglo-Saxons, the Old English cognate of the name, Woden, was used to refer to an ancestor of the royal lines of the various petty kingdoms,[1] likely being a reinterpretation of an earlier deity, though little direct evidence remains.[2] In Germany, cognates of the name directly referring to a deity are attested on the Nordendorf fibulae (ᚹᛟᛞᚨᚾ Wodan) and in a baptismal vow found in Mainz (Uuoden). Tacitus mentions the Germans as worshiping Mercury, which has been speculated to refer to Odin, and the day of the week Wednesday (lit. "day of Odin") is a Germanic adaptation of the Latin Dies Mercurii (day of Mercury).
Design
Odin was redesigned by Masayuki Doi for Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse. To reflect the modern reinterpretation of gods as alien entities, Doi took inspiration from Ultraman for the design.[3] Doi's Odin is a warrior in golden armour with blue highlights running down his body and a long blue cape. He wears a golden belt with a blue gem at it's center with constellations reflected in it. His armour has Norse styling, and his helmet has a pair of wings at its side and a beard forged into it. His right eye is consumed by blue flames, possibly referencing his title of Báleygr, meaning "the one with flaming eyes". In his right hand he hold his spear, Gungnir, which has name written in Anglo-Saxon runes (ᚷᚢᛝᚾᛁᚱ)[a] on the lightning bolt-shaped head of the spear, and perched on his left hand is a four-eyed raven in reference to Huginn and Muninn, the two ravens that serve as Odin's scouts.

I wanted to draw his updated design as him in his battle attire, golden, with a blue mantle, ready to show his face on the battlefield. I was also inspired by movies about Norse mythology and I thought that portraying Thor and the other Norse gods as aliens was an interesting idea, so I emphasised the alien (for the Japanese) image of the Ultra Hero."
