The Great Will is a recurring entity in the Megami Tensei franchise. This entity is frequently referred to by different names and multiple games across the franchise feature concepts similar to it.
Profile
The Great Will is commonly described as the overseer of the universe or the infinite cycle of world recreation.[1][2] One prominent function of the Great Will is to respond to the collective thoughts of Humanity, by manifesting Demons as avatars, referred to as Bunrei[a] in the Japanese text.[3]
Major Law-aligned figures, such as YHVH, often associate themselves with the Great Will.[3][4][5][6]
Game Appearances
Shin Megami Tensei II
After YHVH is defeated, he rebuffs Aleph for killing him, saying that Humanity is not strong enough to live without his guidance. He follows this by stating that as long as humanity desires his guidance, the Great Will of the Universe will always bring him back into existence.[3]
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
In the Neutral ending, Kagutsuchi questions the Demi-fiend for choosing a Reason of freedom, stating that the Great Will once allowed the world to be free in hopes that it would lead the world towards a new evolution. However, this freedom unwittingly fostered an evil that ultimately led to the world's destruction. Because of this, Kagutsuchi declares Demi-fiend unworthy of his powers to recreate the world, and compares him to Lucifer, referring to him as a slave to freedom.[7]
The Great Will is mentioned in the game over screen.[8]
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax
In Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax, the Great Will, also referred to as the Absolute One[b], is confirmed to be the architect of the Conception system.[9][10] Across the Amala Universe, there are innumerable worlds with their own instance of Kagutsuchi exist, which will all be destroyed and recreated indefinitely as new Reason holders rise up.[1] Similarly, the ethereal forces of light and dark have been engaged in an eternal battle for dominance, forcing all being in existence into becoming helpless cogs caught in the middle of a forever war.[11] One notable example being Jyoji Hijiri, who had the privilege of determining his future lives through his karma taken from him and was unknowingly forced to witness the ravages of their spiritual war for all of eternity due to committing a mortal sin.[12] In order to stop the cycles imposed by the Great Will, Lucifer created the Demi-fiend, so he could serve as his champion.[11][13] For this reason, he had the Demi-fiend battle the Fiends for their candelabra, to test and cultivate his ability, ultimately leading to the Demi-fiend rejecting his Humanity for the sake of demonkind.[14] Metatron, a servant of the Great Will, attempts to stop the Demi-fiend, but fails.[15] This leads to the Destruction ending where all of the Reason holders are defeated and the Demi-fiend meets Kagutsuchi with the intention to destroy the world. As he's defeated, Kagutsuchi exclaims that the Demi-fiend will be cursed for all of eternity for eliminating any chance of the world's rebirth and subsequent evolution.[16][17] With the death of Kagutsuchi, the destruction of the world was assured. This cessation of the cycle tore the fabric of reality and the flow of time slowed to a half as the Blond Child and the Old Man in a Wheelchair fused to become Lucifer, who reveals that he himself was created by the Great Will. After testing the Demi-fiend one last time, Lucifer gathers the armies of chaos to march toward the final battle between the light and the dark.[18][19] The game fades to black as a disembodied voice acknowledges Lucifer's goals and states that doom will forever set them apart.[20]
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
On the Law route, after Zelenin converts the crew with her holy song, Williams says that the Great Will has corrected their path and encourages the protagonist to defeat Mem Aleph in order to create their paradise.[4]
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
In the Womb of Grief, a Dantalian refers to themselves as information derived from the Great Will.[21]
The Great Will is also mentioned twice by the Three Wise Men. On the New Law route, when Zelenin rejects them, the Three Wise Men say that she was unable to comprehend the Great Will.[5] Later, on all routes, after the Three Wise Men transform into Shekinah and are defeated, they mention the Great Will in their last regrets.[6]
Shin Megami Tensei V
Upon the Nahobino defeating the Demi-fiend and returning to the World of Shadows, Sophia says that he should follow the Great Will[c] and recreate the universe.[2]
Similarly, Tao Isonokami states multiple times that creation is "the will of the universe"[d]. If the Nahobino chooses the Humanity ending, Tao says that if he refuses to create a new world he will reject the will of the universe itself. The term also appears in the epilogue of the True Humanity ending when Amitabha says "Could the world truly exist apart from Mandala? Only the cosmos know what tomorrow will bring.", localized as "cosmos".[22]
Shinyaku Last Bible
- Main article: The Omnipresent
The Omnipresent[e], also referred to as "God" or Great Will, is a title describing the being tasked with overseeing the universe.[23] Despite being omnipresent, they are not omnipotent and can only balance the fixed amount of good and evil energy in the universe.[24]
The position of the Omnipresent is rotating as part of a cycle that has lasted for hundreds of millions of years.[23] The role can be obtained by intelligent lifeforms with sufficiently harmonious minds, known as Qualified Ones, through reincarnation.[25]
Ronde
After Aeshma is defeated, Athena prepares for the destruction of the world and tells Aeacus that the time has come for the Great Will to make the final choice. Then Aeacus asks Asuka Miroku if they will choose to fulfill the covenant and recreate the world.[26]
If the Demon Hrungnir is in the party when defeating the final boss, in their farewell dialog they say that their victory was granted by the Will of the Universe.[27]

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
- Main article: Earth's Will
The Earth's Will, also known as the Will of the Earth,[f] is an aggregation of the thoughts of the intellectual beings that live on Earth. Under normal circumstances, the Earth's Will remains in the Information Dimension; however when the survival of the planet is in jeopardy, the concepts contained within the Will manifest into physical reality in the form of Demons and the Schwarzwelt.[30][31][32] Prior to the events of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, after humanity lost faith in YHVH, the equilibrium of the Earth's Will was disrupted. This led to the Mothers defeating him and the subsequent formation of the Schwarzwelt.[33]
The relation between the Earth's Will and the Great Will in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is unclear. Both entities are credited with producing Demons from information, but they are mentioned in different contexts. Most notably, the Great Will is largely associated with Law, while the Earth's Will is associated with Chaos.[21][4][5][6][33]
Shin Megami Tensei IV
If Flynn is Chaos-aligned in the Monochrome Forest, Lucifer states that as long as Humanity exists, beings like him and the White will always return.[34]
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
- Main article: Axiom
The Axiom[g] is an underlying aspect of reality that controls the cycle of reincarnation.[35][36] Messiahs and the ability of Observation are granted to Humanity by the Axiom.[36][37] It is also the origin of Demonkind, which function as its Bunrei.[38]
Shin Megami Tensei V
- Main article: Mandala System
The Mandala System[h] is described as a "spatial governing phenomenon" that maintains the cycle of world recreation. After a Nahobino claims the Throne of Creation, a Da'at will eventually form, ultimately leading to the death of the throne's previous owner and the rise of a new Nahobino.[39]

- Main article: Consciousness
The Consciousness[j] is a being that pervades all of time and space that describes itself as having no name, language, meaning, or consciousness. After Asuka Miroku defeats Angra Mainyu, the Consciousness tells him that reality as he knows it is an illusion. Asuka is told that he must learn that there is no distinction between this world and the next, and that life is eternal as it begins once more after death.[40]
Misnomers
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax
In the English localization, after Metatron speaks to the Demi-fiend in the Second Kalpa, a Flauros says that they heard a sound like the voice of the universe from his direction. In the original Japanese text, Flauros instead refers to the sound as the "voice of the Great Will".[41][42]
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
In the English localization, when Nanashi is challenged by Satan to fight YHVH, Satan says that Nanashi discover if he is worthy of becoming the will of the universe. However, in the original Japanese script, Satan uses the term "ancestor"[k] instead, likely referring to the possibility of Nanashi becoming the progenitor of a newly created world.[43][44]
Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2
During the tutorial for the Summoning Portal, Arisa Habara makes reference to a Will of the Great Cosmos which she associates with the inequality of fate that Demons summoned through Banners are often strong without any investment. However, in the original Japanese script, the term used is 宇宙の摂理 uchū no setsuri, which is likely referring to the providence of the universe rather than a specific figure.[45]
Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon
In the localization, Baek Yong tells Raidou to meet them where people pray to the Great Will, in reference to the Catholic Church; however, this is a misnomer. In the original Japanese script, Baek Yong instead says to meet them where people pray to foreign gods.[46][47]
Trivia
- The code of Shin Megami Tensei V features unused dialog for the epilogue to the True Humanity ending where Amitabha says "Only the Great Will (大いなる意志 ōinaru ishi) knows what lies in store." instead of "Only the cosmos (大宇宙の意志 dai uchū no ishi) know what tomorrow will bring." This is present in both the English and Japanese scripts.[48][22]
- In Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax promotional documents intended for members of the gaming industry, Lucifer's arch-nemesis is referred to as YHVH instead of the Great Will.[49][50]
- Within the code to Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster, the disembodied voice's dialog at the end of Destruction Ending is credited to YHVH.[51][52]
- The Japanese version of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax features multiple spellings of Great Will, most notably 大いなる意思 ōinaru ishi, which was introduced in Nocturne. However, 大いなる意志 ōinaru ishi, which was introduced in Shin Megami Tensei II, is also used in a single line of dialog by a Flauros, who also uses the alternative spelling in a previous line of dialog.[53]
- Mem Aleph's voice actress Sayaka Ohara described her character as having "the unfathomable presence of the Great Will" when explaining how she performed her role.[54]

Translation: "Demon (Metatron): The place you humans know as the Schwarzwelt... Its purpose is, in a sense, to purify the Earth. It reflects the anger of the mother goddesses... and of Mother Earth itself, you might say. But the earth understood that it would be difficult to carry out. There was once a god that was victorious over the Mothers, and established humanity on Earth... As long as He protected the humans, the situation we find ourselves in now could not have occurred. But this equilibrium was eroded over time. Humans lost their faith in Him, and He forgot his love for humans. Worship of Him faltered, and the Earth did not fail to seize the moment once His power weakened. The mother goddesses subdued Him as they were once subdued. In this state, He was torn to pieces, and His dispersed power was sealed in many dimensions... I believe a part of me is sealed deep in this land. It is a power that calls out to me... I can feel it." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. Developed by Atlus. Published by Atlus. Humans have the power to assign an answer to phenomena without an answer. The power of observation has the ability to make certain and stable what is uncertain and without form. - ↑ "Lucifer: As the Lord of Chaos, I defeated the Creator, consumed his Knowledge, and became more than He could possibly imagine. It was then I came to understand this world. Allow me to share what I'd learned. Following the world's recreation, a new Da'at will eventually appear, and soon after the gods will rise up to claim the throne. Battle after battle, you sought to purge demons from this world. But they will come slithering back, as they always do. This endless cycle is the result of a spatial governing phenomenon known as the "Mandala System." Do you not wish to be free of such restrictions? Do you not wish to be free from Mandala's eternal machinations? Long have I searched for a way to truly be free. At last, I have found but one possibility. End me. Consume my Knowledge. And with it, wrest this world from the Mandala's endless eons. This is the reason for my transcendence." Shin Megami Tensei V. Developed by ATLUS.
