Decarabia is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Design

In all of its appearances, Decarabia is a red, starfish-shaped demon with a single large eye at its center. This design was inspired by the appearance of the Pairans in Warning from Space, a 1959 science fiction film directed by Koji Shima.[1]

In its Shin Megami Tensei design, Decarabia's eye is yellow and its body is covered in bulging veins.

In its design revision for the PlayStation version of Shin Megami Tensei, Decarabia's eye is blue and has prominent lower eyelashes. Its back was also colored blue, and its body is now smoother in texture. The red color on its front side has also been lightened.

In Shin Megami Tensei: Nine, the blue half of Decarabia's body is treated as a carapace of sorts -- the red half moves separately during some animations, and the shell falls off completely during its death animation. Both parts are connected in future 3D appearances.[citation needed]

Game Appearances

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne

In Shibuya, a Decarabia can be found complaining that his friend Forneus, the same one from the Shinjuku Medical Center, is late to meet up with him. If spoken to he will ask the Demi-fiend if he has seen Forneus, though he will not believe him if he answers that he has, and continues to wonder where he is. If the Demi-fiend returns to him later, Decarabia will wonder if Forneus was killed, and will once again ask him if he is okay. If the Demi-fiend tells Decarabia that he killed him, Decarabia will not believe him again, underestimating the Demi-fiend's prowess simply based on his appearance. He goes back to wondering where Forneus could be.

At the end of the game, once the Tower of Kagutsuchi has appeared, Decarabia will comment on its appearance, and how despite the time of creation being close, Forneus never came to meet him.[2]

Reason: Navigator information and kaiwan special conversation

If the Nahobino has a Forneus recruited and tries to speak to an enemy Decarabia, the Forneus may step forward to initiate a special conversation with it. Forneus is glad to see Decarabia and notes it has been a long time since the last time they saw each other, though Decarabia points out that the last time they were supposed to meet up, Forneus never appeared, referencing the Decarabia waiting for Forneus in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. Forneus is confused at this however and cannot recall having arranged to meet up with him, and suggests that he may be misremembering events due to how much the Netherworld has changed since then, which convinces Decarabia as his own memories of the time are fuzzy. Decarabia is nonetheless glad to see Forneus is okay and gives him an item to celebrate their reunion. He suggests arranging another get-together, but as Forneus declines, Decarabia leaves.

Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation

This section contains spoilers. (Skip Section)

Decarabia is one the demons that eats the body of Yuuka Tachibana in Hatsudai Shelter once he arrives as a guest of honor alongside other demons with Murmur, he holds within his body the left leg of Yuuka.

Ayato Katsuragi finds Decarabia again at the Rinkai Colosseum, he says he's there to make an attack against Hiruko saying that he is only a shadow of what he once was, and so Decarabia throws a bomb at Hiruko and a light blinds Katsuragi and everyone in the room.

Depending on the choices made the story will play out different:

  • If Katsuragi doesn't do anything he'll find himself at the Baal Cult Branch and Decarabia will say that he's persistent for following him to a place like that, and so he starts a fight with Katsuragi. After Decarabia is defeated he wonders why a guy like him has such power, and so he becomes dust and Yuuka's left leg appears.
  • If Katsuragi jumps at the explosion he'll find himself at the Yomi and Hiruko will reveal his true form to him. After that he's send back to Tokyo.

Now after Katsuragi advances in the story he'll find Tammuz at Tokyo Tower, he says that he will not let him enter the Antarabhava, after he's defeated Decarabia will appear and say he expected too much from Tammuz and says that he's mad at Katsuragi for having survived the explosion at the Rinkai Colosseum, then a fight will begin and after he's defeated he drops the left leg of Yuuka.

End of spoilers.
