Clotho is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Clotho originates in Greek mythology in which she is the youngest of the Fates, or Moirai, alongside Lachesis and Atropos. Together, they are responsible for overseeing the lives of both mortals and deities and making sure they follow the destiny that has been set for them by the universe. Clotho is responsible for spinning the thread of fate for each person from the moment they are born.

Design

Clotho's design, as well as the design of the other Moirai sisters, take heavy inspiration from the works of British fashion designer Antonio Berard and French hairstylist Nicolas Jurnjack.[citation needed] Clotho herself appears as a tall, pale woman wearing a white sweater alongside white pants. Around her waist she wears a long, grey dress which reaches all the way to the ground. She also appears to be wearing a golden mask which covers the lower half of her face. Her hair is a bright golden color, save for a section on both sides of her head, which is instead a bright green.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne

Clotho is one of the Moirae Sisters guarding the Obelisk under Hikawa's orders and is described as being "Cold-Looking".

When the Demi-fiend is exploring the Obelisk, Clotho along with her sisters appear to mock and taunt the Demi-fiend, with Clotho specially commenting how Hikawa had predicted that a "rat" would wander in. She beckons him to come to them, telling him that Kagutsuchi repeats the process of birth and death and that it will not wait for him.

When the Demi-fiend is doing one of the puzzles to progress the Obelisk, he encounters Clotho, who introduces herself as the youngest Moirae Sister who winds the thread of his life and attacks him, though she retreats before he can kill her.

Right before the Demi-fiend can reach the topmost floor of the Obelisk, Clotho and her sisters stop him and attack him together, though they are ultimately defeated.

Trivia

  • In most games, by combining the sprites of Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, one can see the thread is continued across each sprite as the sisters takes on their designated roles.
  • In Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, if the Demi-fiend fails the Obelisk puzzle, he must fight Clotho a second time, who, amused by his persistence, will suggest making him her and her sisters' lover, though she will dismiss the notion in favor of following Hikawa's orders.[1]
