Essences are a mechanic in Shin Megami Tensei V.

Overview

A demon's Essence contains every skill that demon knows innately and is able to learn via leveling and their resistances. In the World of Shadows, the Nahobino can use acquired Essences on himself or any of his demons via Apotheosis, allowing them to instantly learn some of the skills in that Essence. Which skills are accessible is determined by how many of the "Art of Essences" Miracles the Nahobino has learned - only the demon's innate skills can be accessed initially. Aditionally, once the Nahobino learns the Divine Amalgamation Miracle, he is able to overwrite his own resistances with those of an Essence.

Any action involving an Essence consumes it, and the Nahobino can only hold one of each Essence at a time. They may be acquired as level up gifts from a demon, in Negotiation, as drops from enemy demons, as rewards for quests, from chests, or purchased from Cadaver's Hollow.
