Dionysus (Greek: Διόνυσος, romanized Diónysos), also known as Bacchus (Greek: Βάκχος, romanized Bákchos) is a god of wine-making and madness in ancient Greek culture with origins in Mycenaean Greece dating back to the 13th century BC, making him among the oldest deities of greek mythos.
The child of Zeus with the human Semele. When Zeus' wife Hera of the affair she was enraged and appeared before the pregnant Semele in the form of an old woman, manipulating her into doubting that she was having a child with the god Zeus and advising her to ask to Zeus to reveal his true godly form as proof that he was divine. When the two next met, Zeus swore an oath on the River Styx that he would fulfill any request she asked to which Semele requested to see his godly form. Despite his begging she refused to ask anything else and oath bound Zeus did as she asked, instantly burning her body to ash. The fetal Dionysus however survived due to his godly heritage, and in order to save his son Zeus sew Dionysus into his thigh until he was mature enough to be born fully.
